They’ve undertaken what can only be described as a breathtaking makeover of their product line. The resulting automobiles and SUVs are stunning inside and out, with their medium-sized SUV, the XC-60, leading the pack. For a start, this is an elegant vehicle to gaze upon, with a rising beltline, subtle haunches over the rear wheels, and a lower nose giving an impression of sportiness to what has become one of the most popular luxury SUVs in today’s marketplace. The XC-60 comes in two versions. The T5 Momentum is the entry level version, while the T6 boasts of a 2-0-liter direct injection in-line four with a supercharger that boosts the power to 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. This makes for quite snappy performance, combined with a more deluxe interior, complete with driftwood trim. An eight-speed automatic with manual paddles proves entertaining driving. The version I drove was a loaded T6 that had virtually every available option installed, with a super deluxe Bowers and Wilkins stereo for a start, but not the optional air suspension. You settle into a classically Scandinavian interior—restrained, tasteful, with leather seats, a large central touchscreen complete with navigation, and a power lift rear gate. I’ve driven a lot of automobiles for Len in recent years, but nothing comes close to the superlative comfort of Volvo seats, front and rear. They are supportive, infinitely adjustable, yet deliciously comfortable after long journeys. The seats alone make the XC-60 an ideal choice for many people. As I eased into the traffic, I discovered at once that the T6 is lively. You have instant response when accelerating from lights, more than enough acceleration for any normal driving, and exceptional freeway performance. The blind spot lights are invaluable, and on the freeway, the adaptive cruise control works very well. You can automate your drive to some degree, but I did not use those features. I like driving! This is a very nice long-distance traveler, which is livelier than some other SUVs and encourages concentration to get the most out of it. This is as it should be: this is an SUV for conscientious drivers. On sweeping and winding country roads, the T6 comes into its own, aggressive yet civilized, even if rougher surfaces can bring some noise into the cabin—but it is never bothersome. I had a fabulous time in the mountains, taking a longer trip than usual up the local peaks and along the top. I slipped into manual and used the paddles, zipping through the steep curves and hairpins in second and third with utter smoothness and without a care in the world. One just felt serenely in control. This is an utterly marvelous, civilized, yet practical SUV by any standards. The XC-60 is ideal for smaller families and for people who drive long distances or commute regularly. It isolates you from the road, provides a very adequate touchscreen center (which takes time to master—but it’s worth it), and will haul a surprisingly massive load if the back seats are folded down. Like all Volvos, it’s equipped with every safety device imaginable, so it’s one of the safest vehicles on the road. On top of everything else, it’s gorgeous to look upon, and the interior is a luxurious dream.
