People customize automobiles are often perfectionists, who become obsessed with the project they have undertaken. This lovely customized Jeepster with a Corvette chassis, an 8-cylinder Chevrolet 350ci powerplant, and beautiful maroon-red body is a classic example of the genre. It is quite unlike anything else I’ve driven, and that’s a lot of conveyances. I call this a conveyance, because that’s what it really is. You sit in the driver’s seat with a large steering wheel and a dashboard that is completely modified (for the better) from the original. Turn the ignition key—there is no button here—and a loud growl announces that you’re ready to go. Visibility is excellent, the mirrors appropriate. It takes a little while to get used to the steering column drive lever, they engage smoothly and away you drive. The acceleration is deliberate, enabling you to navigate safely in thick traffic. The accelerator paddle is idiosyncratic, A little close to the brake You progress in fine style, making careful use of the brakes, which stop you smoothly. Give yourself a little more time, and leave adequate gaps between you and the vehicle in front of you. No tailgating here! I made smooth progress, accompanied by well tuned exhaust noise, through suburban and country roads, flattered by the people who waved at my somewhat unconventional conveyance. It was perfect driving weather, which made the convertible a delight without too much wind to disturb you. Cornering required careful judgement of your speed, but you could follow lines out of bends with ease. There’s definitely a learning curve here, but I became more and more comfortable as a few miles passed. I returned to the lot in the freeway, which, to my surprise, turned out to be very civilized. The speed increased smoothly, the noise level from astern quietened significantly, and we chuntered along at 65 without any complaints. I had some acceleration in reserve if I had needed it, but I was not going into the faster lanes, where German sports sedans were jousting. I don’t know that one would go on a very long journey in the Jeepster, but it is certainly capable of covering distance quite comfortably. This is definitely not an automobile for everyone, certainly not for families. But I suspect the previous owner built it simply to enjoy himself on shorter weekend journeys. That’s what I would use it for—as a second car that is loyal and entertaining, that turns heads, and makes you feel good. The previous owner certainly had a good time. He owned it for 36 years. A unique means of transportation this, put together and maintained by skilled, loving hands. There’s not a rattle and cosmetically it’s perfect. If you’re looking for an entertaining and unusual classic American automobile that is truly unique, here it is. I guarantee you’ll have a lot of fun and be the envy of people in more conventional vehicles. Just sitting in it, you turn heads—or at least I did, and I’m not exactly beautiful.
